But don't worry because like most dogs, Mastiffs are easily trained and are eager to please their masters. But you need to start as young as you can to remain consistent during the training process and also be sure that they aren't trying to exploit you.

What Makes Mastiffs Special

Mastiffs are very calm and relaxed dogs and sometimes they don't seem to be keen on exercising. So, make sure that you give them lots of exercise and on a daily basis.

Also keep in mind that Mastiffs need a lot more socialization than other pet dogs. So, be sure to be home all the time and give them attention because all the Mastiff training in the world is worthless if you're never home and they get stressed.

And lastly, you must be tolerant when training your Mastiff since they can be a bit hard headed and also because of their size its evident that training them will not be an easy task.

Mastiff Training Basics

Mastiff training is best to start young. But remember to make sure that your mastiff puppy stays with his mom for at least 8 weeks of age. It is because Mastiffs have a carefully balanced personality and it's important that he gets the proper socialization that he needs.

As he grows older, you need to keep that socialization. This means that someone in the family or household has to be home with the mastiff puppy every single day until the dog turns 3 months of age. And also keep in mind that they have to be socialized with other dogs as much as possible.

Training your mastiff to be a guard dog is not recommended. This is because their personality is not easily controlled if they start learning to be guard dogs. Their size should be enough to frighten any possible invaders and they will be defensive if needed.

Mastiff Training for Obedience

As stated earlier training your Mastiff should start at a young age and this also goes with obedience training. You can begin training them at around 10-14 weeks when the puppy has been housebroken. Also keep in mind never to get hostile or be aggressive towards a Mastiff because as they get older the danger of such a large dog as it ages.

Because almost all mastiffs are calm and relaxed dogs they likely won't be doing a lot of tricks. And the most important thing you can train them is to sit and stay as well as to walk on a leash. It is also highly recommended to train them not to chase things because it can be hard to keep a dog with its size in control.

When training your Mastiff remember to have lots of dedication on your part. And always never forget to keep your Mastiff socialized with a huge family, neighbors or a local dog park.
